Aqueduct Bridge Story

Aqueduct Bridge Story

When I was I in my twenties, I moved to southern Mexico to live and work. I wanted to find out what I was capable of – to experience adventure, to learn and to unfold what to do with my life.

One autumn weekend while living in Oaxaca, I took a trip to a rural pueblo outside of the city to explore the countryside. My friend and I set out on a brambly hike, and soon arrived at the edge of a deep ravine. Looking down, then across, my friend pointed to the other side and presented the challenge: On the other side you will see pristine natural beauty, out of reach to the passerby. The only way to cross is this aqueduct.

I look down at the 30-foot ravine, and then in front of me, at the awkward curb-width edge of the aqueduct. I looked at the 8-foot drop in the middle of the curb-edges of the aqueduct; it was filledwith murky water and slime. And then, my eyes gazed across to the other side. The promise of profound beauty, yet unexplored, sparked my sense of adventure, possibility and challenge.

With a deep breath I focused forward – no looking down, no looking back – and started to cross to my imagined Garden of Eden. Step by step, steadily, I carefully moved forward. The aqueduct served as my bridge. I made the crossing.

Focus and determination led me to my goal and crossed to the other side. The air was sweet. The birds sung beautifully, and the dessert flowers speckled the countryside. The thrill of the challenge, the intensity of focus and the step-by-step journey across might have been the sweetest part of the arrival.

Over the years, the experience of crossing that deep ravine and arriving where I had hoped to go has stayed with me, and it continues to serve as a symbol for all the yet unreached possibilities that lie ahead.

I keep this photo on my desk, as a reminder that we all have bridges to cross – and with forward focus and determination, it’s possible. And there is a profound beauty – not only in the arrival, but in the journey.
